D using Twitter and Facebook
This page is part of the ComMetrics University – FAQ section of our services, which includes:
- the FAQ about Xing SM Monitoring group, A choosing the most appropriate forum, B effective searching, C using RSS feed, D using Twitter and Facebook (you are here),
and the FAQ about webinars.
Many groups on Xing are closed which means you can read content only, if you are a member. We have a slightly different philosophy that has worked quite well for us.
Our content is accessible for anybody if you use the correct link. Here we explain how this works.
1 – The link for our group SM Monitoring looks like this: https://www.xing.com/net/pric659adx/smmetrics
If you are not logged into Xing you cannot read the above except for a short summary. To allow others that are neither Xing members nor SM Monitoring group members you have to share the following link:
https://www.xing.com/net/smmetrics
In the above link we have excluded the pric659adx code that prevents those not being Xing members and logged in from accessing.
2 – The same procedure applies to any link in any of our forums. To make these accessible remove the weird code as illustrated below:
https://www.xing.com/net/pric659adx/smmetrics/best-practice-social-media-101-q-as-discussions-about-benchmarking-measuring-etc-502278/helping-a-client-attain-goals-on-twitter-30018314/30023784/#30023784
https://www.xing.com/net/smmetrics/best-practice-social-media-101-q-as-discussions-about-benchmarking-measuring-etc-502278/helping-a-client-attain-goals-on-twitter-30018314/30023784/#30023784 (tweet and share this please)
If you share the latter link without the pric659adx code embedded your friends can read your contribution. As importantly, search engines can follow the link and archive it.
So how can I tweet a reply or post from our Xing group?
To tweet about one of your Xing posts or to share a post’s link on your Facebook wall you need to use a URL shortener such as SnipURL or TinyURL,
Okay let us play this through, we have this link:
https://www.xing.com/net/pri11a867x/smmetrics/best-practice-social-media-101-q-as-discussions-about-benchmarking-measuring-etc-502278/2010-05-26-webinar-helping-a-client-attain-goals-on-twitter-30018314/30023784/#30023784
Eliminating the funny code pri11a867 gives us:
https://www.xing.com/net/smmetrics/best-practice-social-media-101-q-as-discussions-about-benchmarking-measuring-etc-502278/2010-05-26-webinar-helping-a-client-attain-goals-on-twitter-30018314/30023784/#30023784
Go to your favorite URL-shortening (einem Kurz-URL-Dienst) and get the link, I got: http://tiny.cc/p6m1n.
Of course, the latter can be tweeted or put on a Facebook wall. In turn, your Twitter followers or Facebook friends can read your post as well helping you reach more people and build your reputation further.
When you then use the above link and tweet it using Twitter or Identi.ca, please use the hashtag #ComMetrics.
A hashtag is similar to a keyword so people who search Twitter can find it quicker.
Above you have an example of how it can be done by Chiara.
I then re-tweeted Chiara’s tweet as is shown to the right.
What are the results?
Tweeting got the story 64 reads within less than 2 hours. Mind you, it was lunch time so many were not at their desks and the US was still asleep.
Some of these individuals are, of course, not members of the group. Nevertheless, in this case more is surely better than fewer readers.

However, as the four comments (see highlighted 4 in dark orange) illustrate, more of the SM Monitoring group members will want to read a post if others wrote comments about it. Discussion and interaction attracts more traffic.
So the drill is clear. Write a question or comment on somebody else’s question. Thereafter, tweet about it and put a link to the story up on your Facebook wall. Both these actions will increase visitiors to your post.
The real clincher, however, is getting people to comment on one’s post. If people reply to a question as illustrated above, more people will want to read your post and the replies generated by members.
Sometimes you may have to encourage a fellow them a bit to leave a comment. But, don’t be shy. Because all of us are busy we appreciate a polite nudge by a fellow group member alerting us to a new post or even asking one to write a comment.
How do I know how many people clicked on or read my Xing post?
You can either look at your shortened URL to see how many people clicked on the link.
Else one can click on Forums: ==> https://www.xing.com/net/smmetrics/forums
Click on the category where your post was placed in such as:
===> https://www.xing.com/net/smmetrics/case-studies-successes-flops-and-disasters-515254/
You should now get a view similar to the screenshot shown above including Hits and Comments written for each post in the category.
